Reading in Luke 2:1-20, Joseph and Mary had to make a journey to register for a census being taken in the days of Caesar Augustus so they made a trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem. This was a trip of approximately 100 miles which would have taken 8-10 days. It was a physically demanding trip especially for Mary who was in her 9th month of the pregnancy. From a divine perspective, the trip fulfilled what was prophesized in Micah 5:2.
Once in Bethlehem, the time came for the baby to be born. Mary gave birth to her firstborn son and she wrapped him in cloths and placed Him in a manger because there was no guest room available (v. 7).
Shepherds were keeping watch over their flock when an angel told them the news of a Savior being born. The shepherds were at work and took time to look for Jesus. We need to do the same; taking time to listen for God’s direction and following as we go about our daily work. He’s not distant but near and we can remind ourselves of this amazing truth throughout our day.
